Volunteer
Volunteers are a vital part of the HSHA team. Without them, we would not be able to perform many of the essential functions at our shelter. HSHA is always looking for dedicated and committed volunteers to assist with the shelter animals and some of the everyday responsibilities of shelter life. Whether you are interested in walking dogs, helping at events, or socializing cats, there is a place for you at HSHA. The animals are waiting for you … get started today!
Before You Apply, Please Note:
- All volunteers must be 18 or older.
- The volunteer program is not intended for court-mandated community service or short-term projects.
- Volunteer’s requiring special assistance MUST be accompanied by a friend or family member.
- Completed applications are kept on file for three months and will be discarded if you do not complete the required volunteer orientation within that time.
- We take the safety of our volunteers, staff, and animals very seriously. Because of this, we require applicants to complete a national background check. Our recommended national background check can be found here: https://www.directscreening.com/background-checks.php. The cost is $16.95. You can send us another comparable background check if you have one that has been completed in the last 30 days (There is a location on the form to attach a .pdf of your background check. If you are having difficulty, please email volunteer@humanesocietyhbg.org). Applications will not be reviewed without a background check included.
- We consider volunteering an ongoing commitment between the volunteer and HSHA. Because of this, we require a minimum of 8 volunteer hours a month, including 2 hours of non-direct animal care (such as donation-sorting, events, etc.).
- To help support our animal residents, upon acceptance into the HSHA Volunteer Program there is a $20.00 onboarding fee. This fee includes a volunteer T-shirt, name badge, and volunteer training. Should this fee be an impediment to your ability to volunteer at HSHA please contact the volunteer coordinator prior to applying.
