Domestic Violence

In homes where there is violence, pets are often threatened or injured by the violent partner. The Humane Society of Harrisburg Area, Inc., in partnership with Domestic Violence Services of Cumberland & Perry Counties and the YWCA of Greater Harrisburg, has created the SafeHaven Program for pets in situations like these.

The SafeHaven program provides short-term emergency housing for dogs and cats owned by individuals or families in crisis within Central PA who are staying at a participating domestic violence shelter. The dogs and cats are cared for by foster families under the supervision of Humane Society of Harrisburg Area’s medical and animal care staff.

The SafeHaven program provides free of charge: up to 30 days of board; vaccinations; food and water; daily care and affection.

The SafeHaven program is available for those residing at the YWCA of Greater Harrisburg or Domestic Violence Services of Cumberland & Perry Counties. Referrals to the SafeHaven program can be made by calling one of the participating domestic violence shelters’ hotlines: YWCA of Greater Harrisburg – 800-654-1211 or Domestic Violence Services of Cumberland & Perry Counties – 800-852-2102.

Natural Disasters

Pets are part of the family in many American households and should be well taken care of and protected. In emergencies, pets may be left behind because their owners cannot take them to local emergency shelters. In other cases, pet owners may have to leave their homes quickly, not knowing what to do about their beloved animals. Fortunately, there is a place you can take your pet where it will be loved and cared for in your absence. The SafeHaven Program can be your pet’s temporary home during emergencies.

The dogs and cats participating in the SafeHaven program are cared for under the supervision of the Humane Society of Harrisburg Area’s medical and animal care staff. The SafeHaven program provides free of charge: up to 30 days of board; vaccinations; food and water; daily care and affection.
