$3,000+ Raised to Honor HSHA Alumna, Pixel

Kathryn and husband Chris were devastated when, on December 26th, 2022, their beloved cat, Pixel, passed away suddenly at nearly 18 years old.

Described as clever, chatty, charming and hilarious, Pixel completed “our little family and lived a life of love and luxury,” said Kathryn. “She delighted in standing, or sleeping, on paper, diving into, or sleeping in, boxes, rubbing her face on shoes and lint-rollers, sniffing peaches, nibbling smoked Greenberg Turkey, savoring the wind of air-conditioner vents on her whiskers, participating in Zoom meetings with her mom, watching Red Sox baseball with her dad, lounging in sunny windows, and spending time with her parents. She knew she was gorgeous, so she eagerly posed for tens of thousands of photos and hundreds of videos, which we shared with our friends and loved ones, along with stories of her antics, intelligence and sweetness.”

Pixel was a Humane Society of Harrisburg Area (HSHA) alumna, and two days after her passing, Kathryn reached out to HSHA to find out the best way to raise funds for the shelter to honor Pixel’s life.  HSHA noted that the funds could be used for a resident housing sponsorship, and a plaque could hang at a cat bank in memory of Pixel for a year.  Excited, Kathryn and Chris started fundraising immediately, and the support was overwhelming.

In less than three months, Kathryn and Chris raised more than $3,000 in memory of Pixel.

The amount raised in Pixel’s honor was above and beyond a normal resident housing plaque. HSHA wanted to do something special.  Just a couple of days before Pixel’s 18th birthday, Kathryn and Chris found out a permanent plaque had been placed at one of HSHA’s kitten banks.

The plaque, which was designed by Kathryn and includes an image of Pixel, will remain at the shelter as long as the shelter stands.

“A friend saw a photo I posted of Pixel’s plaque and wants to do something similar at her city’s shelter in western Pennsylvania. Pixel and HSHA are inspirational,” said Kathryn.

“Pixel was the light of my life and always will be,” said Kathryn. “I miss Pixel so much, but I am eternally grateful that I met her at the HSHA West Shore shelter more than 17 years ago.”
