Amid the massive relief effort underway in Texas where flooding has devastated so many communities, the Brandywine Valley SPCA (BVSPCA), Humane Society of Harrisburg Area (HSHA), and Animal Adoption Center (AAC) is answering the call to help by welcoming two separate rescue flights from impacted areas.

On Friday, one of the first rescue flights carrying homeless shelter animals out of destruction to our area will arrive in Delaware. BVSPCA has committed to welcoming at least 20 dogs and puppies from this first flight, made possible by the Bissell Pet Foundation.

These animals were all available for adoption prior to the flooding, and most come from Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter. This shelter, located just miles from some of the hardest hit areas, has been serving as a hub for shelters who were damaged or forced to evacuate. Homeless animals are being moved out so that the shelters in the area can focus on reuniting pets found after the flooding with their owners, supporting impacted pet families in their communities, and repairing any damage they have suffered.

“When the call came asking for us to step up, we had to say yes,” said Adam Lamb, BVSPCA CEO. “As is the case in many shelters, our kennels are also full, but we are grateful for our community’s support, and to have multiple locations where we can welcome these survivors and give them the promise of a new life.”

The dogs from this first flight will be made available at BVSPCA’s West Chester and New Castle Campuses, as well as the Animal Adoption Center in Lindenwold, New Jersey. Other dogs from the flight will be taken to other local shelters in Delaware and New Jersey.

On Saturday, a second Rescue Flight in partnership with Dog is My CoPilot will bring shelter animals from Austin Pets Alive!, who has been working with shelters, including Kerrville Pets Alive! from some of the hardest hit areas to move shelter animals out to give the organizations room to help their communities recover.

Approximately 20 animals will arrive on this second flight and will be taken to BVSPCA’s West Chester Campus and the Humane Society of Harrisburg Area.

After arrival, all of the animals will be evaluated by the medical team and begin going up for adoption as early as the day they arrive.

The BVSPCA, HSHA and AAC is asking for the community’s help. “Our everyday work doesn’t stop when we step up to help during a natural disaster,” said Lamb. “We need our community to join us in this time of crisis by adopting and donating.”

Community members can support this lifesaving mission by adopting a new companion, whether a newly arriving survivor from Texas, or a local animal still looking for a home, every adoption makes room to help another animal in need. Monetary donations to support the cost of care for these animals, or items like towels, blankets, or purchased from the BVSPCA’s Wish Lists, can also be made or dropped off to support this lifesaving mission.
