LJ was saved from horrible conditions by our Humane Police Officer. Left in a basement for days at a time, LJ had to fight with other dogs for food that would be thrown on the floor for them. LJ came to HSHA with physical and emotional wounds that needed healing, but a spirit that hadn’t been broken.
Our dedicated medical team treated his injuries and our caring behavior team worked with him to help him learn to trust again. No longer in pain and finally safe, LJ’s sweet personality surfaced. It wasn’t long until he found his happily ever after with a new family. Even better, LJ’s adopters recently welcomed a little sister named Ruby, also from HSHA, to the family!
This survivor is one of more than 3,000 animals we will help in Harrisburg this year, and we make sure each one receives the individual care they need. Some stay only a few days, some, like LJ, a little longer, and others need months of medical treatment and rehabilitation before they’re ready for the next chapter.
We can only do this work because of you.
This Giving Tuesday, a generous $10,000 match means your gift goes twice as far. Every dollar you give is doubled and will help the next dog, cat, puppy, kitten, or small animal who arrives in need get the care, attention, and second chance they deserve.
When Button arrived at HSHA, this handsome Boxer had a spirit that just wanted to keep up with the world around him. But his body couldn’t. Both of his CCLs — the ligaments in the knees that let dogs run and jump, were torn.
For Button every step was painful. Our dedicated medical team had to make a choice. Traditional surgery was an option, but not a good one. Boxers often struggle with that path, and for Button, it could have meant a difficult recovery with no guaranteed relief. So the team chose something different — something full of possibility!
Being part of the Brandywine Valley SPCA means more resources and opportunities for our pets. Button was taken to BVSPCA’s New Castle Campus where our team collected stem cells from him, and used them to treat both of his knees. A treatment designed not just to avoid surgery, but to give him a chance at a pain-free life. And just as importantly, the stem cells that weren’t needed immediately were stored away, should Button ever need support later in life. Button is currently in foster living like a real dog and waiting for his forever home.
Button reminds us of the lengths we all go to keep our pets from hurting — lengths that you make possible. The Brandywine Valley SPCA will care for 25,000 homeless pets this year, across the entire footprint, with more than 3,000 right here in Harrisburg. Because of you, we’re able to meet them where they are, offering comfort, healing, and hope.
This Giving Tuesday, your gift ensures pets like Button get the individual care they need. And with today’s generous $10,000 match, all donations are doubled, making sure your kindness goes twice as far to help pets move into a life free from pain – and full of possibility.
Give today. Double your impact.
Double the impact for the most vulnerable – like Houdini.
When Houdini’s original owner entered hospice care and would not be returning home, he and his four siblings had nowhere to go. Scared and without the only human they’d ever known, HSHA was called to the home to help. We were able to catch four cats easily, but Houdini lived up to his name.
Our Humane Police Officer first saw Houdini run into the basement of the home, then into a crawl space. Cat food and even rotisserie chicken was left out to entice Houdini to no avail, so the officer installed a trail camera to capture Houdini’s movements. The footage showed the frightened kitty was hesitant to enter a small cat trap, but when a larger dog trap was installed, Houdini entered immediately to grab the food, and this magician was brought to safety.
Houdini opened up quickly at the shelter, showing his sweet self, and it didn’t take long for him to find a new fur-ever family.
This is what no paws left behind looks like. We’ll care for more than 3,000 animals this year, and because of you we can help those, like Houdini, who lose their homes. You give us the support we need to say yes to cases like Houdini’s that take time, resources, and patience.
Thanks to a generous $10,000 match, every gift made today will be doubled, providing twice the medical care, twice the healing, twice the hope, twice the second chances. Please give today and double your impact for pets like Houdini.
